Citric Acid is an organic acid that occurs naturally in citrus fruits, such as orange, lemon, mandarin and lime. Echer is the raw material of citric acid, molasses, a syrup half of which consists of sugar, a by-product from, for example, the maize and sugar beet/cane industry. Citrate is created by fermentation of the molasses. If you add acids, such as sulfuric acid, to the citrate, citric acid is formed.
There are two forms of citric acid: Citric Acid Monohydrate and Citric Acid Anhydrate. Citric acid monohydrate contains water, while the anhydrate contains less than 0.5% water. The citric acid anhydrate is therefore slightly purer than the monohydrate.
Citric acid is used, among other things, to extend the shelf life of cosmetic products, for example you can find citric acid in shampoos, conditioners and (skin) care products. Citric acid can also be used as an acidity regulator in various products.
Another good use for citric acid is in the household. Citric acid kills bacteria and fungi and therefore has a disinfecting effect. You can also remove soap residue, (stubborn) water stains and limescale with citric acid.
