If you are making a water-based product, please consider a preservative. Water can become 'dirty' over time. Cosgard, also known as Geogard® 221, is a preservative and protects your homemade cosmetics against all kinds of (in)visible yeasts, molds and bacteria. The recommended dosage is 0.2% to 1% of the total weight of your final product. Add Cosgard during the cooling phase.
Cosgard is one of the few preservatives approved by Ecocert and is used worldwide in organic cosmetics and personal care products. Cosgard consists of benzyl alcohol and dehydroacetic acid. Benzyl alcohol can cause an allergic reaction, so always test your finished product (not the preservative itself) on a small patch of skin first and wait 24 to 48 hours to see if an allergic reaction occurs.
Cosgard protects your product at pH values between 2 and 8. However, the preservative is less reliable from a pH of 7.
Cosgard is free of parabens, formaldehyde and isothiazolone.
